Heartbreak and Heartfelt Emotions in 2014 SUPERSEAL Slinger Nat’Is

As he exited his car in victory lane, the first thing Chris Wimmer said was that this was the biggest win of his career. On Tuesday night, he held off NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Matt Kenseth to win the 35th Annual SUPERSEAL Slinger Nationals at Slinger Super Speedway in Slinger, Wisconsin.

Wimmer took over the top spot on lap 176 of the 199-lap event after early leader Dennis Prunty fell out of the race with ignition problems. From there, Wimmer was just looking for the finish line.

“I was just trying to get to the end of the race. I kept shouting over the radio, asking how many laps to go,” Wimmer told Speed51.com powered by JEGS.com. “When the flagman showed five laps to go, I knew I just had to hang
on there, run the same laps and not screw up.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet; this is a neat deal. I grew up coming here to watch it as a kid and also watch my brother, Scott, race in it. He should have won it a couple of times. But to come here and win it on my second or third try is cool. Scott was in the spotters stand helping me tonight.”

Over the course of the last five laps, Wimmer encountered heavy lap traffic, which allowed Kenseth to close in and challenge for the win.

“We just caught him at the wrong time. If a lapped car would have lifted down the backstretch, we may have had a shot in three and four,” said Kenseth, who was looking for his record-setting seventh win in this race. “Wimmer and Casey Johnson were slipping back, but we weren’t all that great either.”

Dennis Prunty started on the pole and had a dominant car all night. Wimmer didn’t believe he had enough to challenge Prunty for the win but when Prunty fell of the pace and parked his No. 22 machine in the infield, things changed.

“I didn’t have anything for him,” Wimmer said. “But once he broke, my eyes lit up and it was go time.”

Prunty said after the race that, while leading, he just knew something would change the outcome of the race.

“The whole time I felt this was too easy, something was going to happen,” Prunty said. “There was going to be a caution or something else. I stopped pressuring the lapped traffic because I didn’t want those guys to get nervous on going a lap down and crash each other. I just took it easy. My crew was telling me how far back Wimmer was, and I said really? Then with about 25 laps to go, we were done.”

Casey Johnson battled with Kenseth for the second position late in the race and came home with a third-place finish.

“I’m pretty happy with my finish. I thought we had something for Wimmer at the end if the brakes didn’t go away, but the car was pretty quick,” Johnson said. “With 25 laps to go, the brake pedal was pretty much going to the floor.”

The entire race only had two cautions, both of which came in the first half of the race. The second half of the event went caution free.

“I wasn’t surprised that the last 100 laps went caution free,” Kenseth said, when asked about the long run. “With the Hoosier tire they used, along with them grounding the track, it was real sticky out there.”

Former Slinger Nationals winner Conrad Morgan was fourth and Dalton Zehr completed the top-five.

Along with the check for $9,999.99, Wimmer also took home the Larry Detjens Memorial trophy. The trophy was named in honor of Wimmer’s late uncle, who won the first Slinger Nationals 35 years ago. Roughly one month after winning the race, Detjens sadly lost his life in a racing accident at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, Wisconsin.

“This is cool that we are finally able to bring this trophy home to the family, ” Wimmer said. “The trophy means a lot more than many think for all of us.”

July 15, 2014 – SUPERSEAL Presents the 35th Slinger Nationals (In Memory of Dick Trickle)

(Slinger, WI) July 4, 2014 The Slinger Super Speedway’s 35th Annual SUPERSEAL Slinger Nationals presented by Miller Lite, on July 15, is set to pay $9999 to win and $999 to start in a tribute to the late Dick Trickle who carried the familiar number 99 on his race cars.

Dick Trickle became a short-track legend, and was regarded as “America’s Winningest Racer”, with an estimated 1200 wins in his illustrious career. Trickle, who passed on in 2013, was a 4-time champion of the Slinger Nationals, an event that he suggested to then-promoter Wayne Erickson in 1980.

Drivers from across the country are already committed to the event. Topping the list is NASCAR and 6-time Slinger Nationals champion Matt Kenseth, a Wisconsin native.

Steve Dorer, the Red Bud 300 Champion and Florida United Promoters Series Champion, will be visiting from Lakeland, Florida.

Ross Kenseth will make the trip from Michigan in his first visit in his new Boyne Machine entry.

Other Slinger Nationals champions expected are 2005 titlist Nathan Haseleu; 1999 winner Conrad Morgan and 5-time champion Lowell Bennett. in addition, former track champions Steve Apel, Dennis Prunty, Brad “JJ” Mueller, and Al Schill will be looking for their first Nationals title and a $9,999 pay day .

Slinger Speedway is located off of Highways 41 and 144 at 280 Cedar Creek Road in Slinger, WI. Advance sale tickets for the Slinger Nationals and a special meet and greet with Matt Kenseth and other select drivers can be purchased through the track website at Slinger Super Speedway or call the track office at 262-644-5921.

SUPERSEAL Races Iowa/Steve Smith’s 1st Camping World Start

Iowa Speedway) Sept 9, 2013, 2013

Steve Smith made his first ever Nascar Camping World start September 9th at the Iowa Speedway. Despite getting lapped by the leaders, Steve was cruising along and starting to get a great feel for the track while the driver shaft broke and ended his night.

We look forward to seeing Steve race again soon.

Rich Bickle Goes Out a Champion

(Slinger, WI) July 2nd, 2013

Long after the races ended with the crowd filed out of the gates and the parking lots emptied, the quietness around the Slinger Super Speedway would normally be a time for Rich Bickle to reflect on a tremendous career at the world’s fastest ¼ mile oval after earlier crossing the finish line second behind Steve Apel in his final Slinger laps during the SuperSeal Nationals presented by Miller Lite.

However, the stillness quickly turned to surprised astonishment when word came down that after Apel’s car failed post race technical inspection due to an illegal carburetor spacer, Bickle was declared the winner, his fourth triumph in the prestigious super late model event. The fact the victory came in Bickle’s last ever event at the Slinger speed plant in this, his final year of competition, made it even more emotional.

He’s (Apel) a good kid, I don’t know what the hell happened or what’s going on. I’ve been on that side of it too, he’s tore up and that makes me feel bad, Bickle stated from the pit area after learning the $9,999 top prize would be going to him. I don’t want to win a race that way but that’s the way it is.

This is my last year of racing, Bickle continued, I spend $150,000 building cars and doing that so I guess the ten grand will go toward paying for the car I just bought. There’s two ways of looking at this tonight, one guy is really upset, one guy doesn’t feel like he deserved it, but if you (speedway officials) wouldn’t have done that (disqualification) then 34 people, whoever else was here would be on their case about why you didn’t disqualify him and you let him go and that would hurt them. But to see him (Apel) tore up, it sucks but he’s man enough to walk over and hand it (the trophy) to me it’s tough.

SUPERSEAL 200 Race Results (Sept 4, 2012)

It was an exciting night of SLM racing that saw thrills, chills and spills as 28 drivers tried to win the SUPERSEAL 200 at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. With $10,000.00 on the line, it was an all out war to win the race.

Track record holder and SUPERSEAL driver #76 Brian Johnson Jr emerged as the early favorite when he won the pole position in a time of 14.300 seconds. Right behind him was the #6 Chris Skelton from Calgary AB. Both drivers were offered an additional $1,500.00 if they start in the back and win the race. Brian Johnson Jr decided to keep his spot while Skelton accepted the challenge to the roar of the crowd. In a bonus twist, season sponsor at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway, The Dakota Dunes Casino, also plays a game to start the race and with a roll of the dice #70 Trent Seidel moved from 12th to 1st while #76 Brian Johnson Jr moved from 1st to 12th.

Within 5 laps of the green flag Brian Johnson Jr was back right on the tail current race leader Trent Seidel and pressing until something snapped in the rear axle leaving Brian Johnson Jr with only 1 tire to propel his car for the next 195 laps. Despite only having 1 tire, Brian Johnson Jr was still pushing but Seidel was able to hold him off for the rest of the race.

Meanwhile #6 Chris Skelton was also hard charging through the field and with about 75 laps to go he had made his way to the front of the pack and all the way to the winners circle and $10,000.00.

  • 1st place – #6 Chris Skelton
  • 2nd place – #33 Jamie McClennon
  • 3rd place – #70 Trent Seidel
  • 4th place – #24 Cameron Hayley
  • 5th place – #76 Brian Johnson Jr.
